Cannabis law in New Zealand
Recreational cannabis is illegal in New Zealand. Possession, use, cultivation and supply of cannabis for non-medical purposes are offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975. In the 2020 Cannabis Legalisation and Control referendum, New Zealanders narrowly voted against legalising recreational cannabis (approximately 50.7% against, 48.4% in favour).
Medicinal cannabis is legal by prescription.Since the Medicinal Cannabis Scheme became operational in 2020 (under the Misuse of Drugs (Medicinal Cannabis) Amendment Act 2018, regulated by Medsafe's Medicinal Cannabis Agency), registered doctors can prescribe approved medicinal cannabis products to patients for a range of conditions. CBD products are prescription medicines in New Zealand and are not sold over the counter as general consumer goods.
