- Recreational cannabis is ILLEGAL in New Zealand. It is a Class C controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975. Possession, use, cultivation and supply are offences. A 2020 referendum rejected legalisation (50.7% No).
- Medical cannabis is LEGAL by prescription only, from an NZ-registered prescriber, dispensed through a pharmacy. It is NOT funded by Pharmac (patients pay out of pocket).
- Low-dose CBD that meets the NZ definition is not a "controlled drug" but is still, in practice, a prescription / pharmacist-supply medicine — not freely available over the counter.
- Cannabis seeds are a Class C controlled drug; importing them is an offence.
